With the blockbuster season just around the corner, it’s important to know what you’re in for, and where you should be spending those well-earned dineros! It’s time to use some deductive reasoning to figure out whether or not we should be excited for what’s in store!

What to Be Excited About:

  • J.J. Abrams: After such a strong first entry into the Star Trek franchise, it’s hard not to be excited now that director J.J. Abrams is bringing us the second instalment!
  • Benedict Cumberbatch: With his stellar work in the BBC series Sherlock, Benedict Cumberbatch has displayed the charisma, heartlessness and squinty eyes necessary to create the perfect Star-Trek villain!
  • Character-Driven Action: Amazing computer-generated fx and interstellar explosions can only go so far when it comes to action. To really stay engaged, we need the characters to be doing the heavy lifting! After viewing the first 10 minutes of the film in IMAX back in December (before The Hobbit), I can’t wait to see Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the crew, continue to cheat death throughout the cosmos!
  • Strong Ensemble Chemistry: In 2009’s Star Trek, we were introduced to the entire Enterprise crew. The onscreen chemistry between the actors made it easy to connect with the film’s vast array of characters. With this sequel, we see that cast returned and can rest with the assurance that: out of the many things that can go wrong with a blockbuster film, acting chemistry isn’t one we’re likely to find here!

What to Be Worried About:

  • Lots of Lens Flares: If you weren’t a fan of the lens flares in the first film…prepare to be disappointed again. Personally, I didn’t mind them, as they always seemed to fit in with the futuristic, spaceship environment. The lens flares in Abram’s Super 8 however…

What to Watch to Prepare:

It’s a no-brainer here, but go and watch Star Trek again..even just the prologue (featuring a pre-Thor Chris Hemsworth), then tell me you’re not jazzed for this sequel!
